IME 2009 was held in Istanbul |
IME 2009 (International Congress on Insurance: Mathematics and Economics), the Organization Committee of which included TII Director Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel, and which was held at Larespark Hotel in Istanbul between 26-29 May 2009, gathered together the leading figures in the world on insurance. Panel sessions on issues closely related to insurance such as Actuarial Risk Theories, Finance and Insurance, Economy and Insurance, Actuarial Risk Models, Statistical Methods for Insurance and Insurance Models, Insurance and Pension Bonds in Actuarial Practice were carried out during the 3-day Congress.
Furthermore, within the scope of 13th International Congress on Insurance, methodological practices and means on statistics, mathematics and economy are also evaluated. During the sessions in which theories, methods and practices regarding actuarial science and insurance are presented at a technical level, experts from Turkey and abroad shared their presentations and ideas with the participants.

TII participated at a Seminar on “Evaluation of the Reflections of Global Economic Crisis on Turkish Insurance Sector” |
TII Director Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel presented a paper on “Current Status of Turkish Insurance Sector in Global Crisis Environment and the Expectations” at the Seminar on “Evaluation of the Reflections of Global Economic Crisis on Turkish Insurance Sector” on May 6th organized by Güneş Insurance and Foundation of Economic Studies (IAV). In her presentation, Özyüksel discussed the impact of the crisis on EU insurance sector, the probable impact of the crisis on insurance sector, basic factors having impact on Turkish insurance sector during the crisis as well as a projection of Turkish insurance sector’s development between 2008-2012.
At the seminar, the opening speeches were given by the Minister of State Hayati Yazıcı, General Manager of Güneş Insurance İlker Aycı and Chairman of IAV Prof. Dr. Ahmet İncekara. Following the presentation of Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel, a panel session was hold in which Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury Director General for Insurance Ahmet Genç, Ph.D, Secretary General of the Association of the Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Turkey Erhan Tunçay, Bahçeşehir University Institute of Social Sciences Staff Prof. Dr. Niyazi Berk, journalist at Insurance Daily and insurance broker David Kohen and E&Y Partner in Turkey and Insurance Sector Leader Şeyda Oltulu participated as speakers.

2nd Successful Performance by TII Turkish Music Chorus |
TII Turkish Music Chorus, which gave a concert at TII Basic Insurance Training Programme 25th Term Graduation Ceremony, had its 2nd concert at Milli Reinsurance Conference Hall on Friday, May 22nd with “Spring Songs”.
The Chorus was conducted by Ayşenur Özpekel accompanied by a distinguished orchestra and emceed by Yiğit Özpekel. Apart from the distinguished works of Turkish Music, Flamenco, Tango and Turkish Music performances contributed as a different visuality to the concert.
The Founding President of TII Turkish Music Chorus Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel and Milli Reinsurance Deputy General Manager Hüseyin Yunak presented a plate to the Conductor Ayşenur Özpekel for her contribution for the development of the Chorus.

Turkish Insurance Sector 1st Bowling League is completed with the contentious final game |
Turkish Insurance Sector 1st Bowling League, which had begun in January to gather the people from the sector, to provide synergy outside the office environment and to use the competition of sports as a means of communication among the employees of different companies, is completed with the contentious and joyous final game.
At the end of the final game, Anadolu Anonim Turkish Insurance has got the top place with 4860 points, Ak Insurance the second place with 4612 points and Allianz Insurance the third place with 4496 points. In the individual plays, Zeynep Düzen from Yapı Kredi Insurance has got the top place with 919 points, Naci Yılmaz from Anadolu Anonim Turkish Insurance got the second place with 908 points and Erol Gülcemal from Allianz Insurance got the third place with 900 points. The top three teams and players have received their awards from TII Director Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel and Anadolu Anonim Turkish Insurance General Manager Mustafa Su.

4th Insurance Awareness Seminar was given at Erciyes University with the Sponsorship of “Acıbadem Health and Life Insurance” |

The Seminar was carried out at Erciyes University Faculty of Financial and Administrative Affairs with the sponsorship of Acıbadem Health and Life Insurance. The Seminar which took place on May 5th included the presentations of Marmara University Banking and Insurance Vocational School Research Assistant Özgür Akpınar on “Insurance and Us, Acıbadem Health and Life Insurance Head of Adana Region Barış Ünal on “Health and Life Insurance” and TII Head of Marketing and Communications Unit Nurhan Sütlaş on “Turkish Insurance Sector Institutions and TII”. Faculty staff and students attended the seminar.

22nd Education Seminar was carried out in Afyon Kocatepe University with the sponsorship of “Başak Groupama Insurance” |

The 22nd of the Education Seminars, which attract high attention of the students, was carried out on May 8th at Afyon Kocatepe University Bolvadin Vocational High School. At the Education Seminar, TII lecturer and Marmara University Law Faculty staff Prof. Dr. Selim Ataergin had a presentation on “Marine Insurance”, insurance loss adjuster Engin Varlı had a presentation on “Who is a Loss Adjuster?” and TII Head of Education Unit Sema Bilgin had a presentation on “TII and Turkish Insurance Sector Institutions”.

TII carried out a 3-day training programme for the lecturers of “Insurance Agency Technical Personnel Compulsory Training” |
Insurance Agency Technical Personnel Compulsory Training, which should be completed until the end of 2009 according to the regulation made by Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury, has begun on May 22nd. The lecturers of this project, in which 25 thousand people will have training, attended the “Training for Trainers” programme that was carried out in May at TII. Academicians from insurance departments of universities as well as the experts from the Head Quarters and District Offices of insurance companies attended the 3-day programme. The participants of the “Training for Trainers” have refreshed their knowledge on the content that will be delivered such as basic insurance training, insurance legislation so as to standardize the trainings.

Increase at the Tailor-Made Training Programmes |
The demand for Tailor-Made Training Programmes, offered within the scope of training programmes organized by Turkish Insurance Institute has increased during the first quarter of 2009. TII organized training programmes on a variety of subjects such as Technical Reserves, Basic Insurance Accountancy, Uniform Chart of Accounts, Introduction to Insurance and Insurance in Turkey and in the World, Insurance Law, Engineering Insurance, Machinery Breakdown and Electronical Device Insurance and Aviation Insurance in May to different companies including banks besides the insurance companies.
Within the framework of its Short Term Training Programmes, announced quarterly to the insurance sector, TII offered “Mangement of Claims Department, Customer and Business Partners' Relations in Insurance Sector” in May.
The training programmes that will be offered June are:

• Private Pension Contract / Rigths and Obligations of the Parties
• Changes Planned to Be Intoduced Regarding the Draft Turkish Commercial Code and Insurance Law and Insurance Law Regulations Changed According to the New Turkish Commercial Code

We are expecting your articles for the 6th issue of Journal of Insurance Studies |
Journal of Insurance Studies, published by TII, is the first and only refereed journal in Turkey on insurance in which the technical and/or theoretical issues in the agenda of the sector are analyzed.
In the “Articles Approved by the Science Committee” section of the journal, there are the articles written in accordance with the academic rules and qualified to be published by the Science Committee. In the “Articles not Submitted for the Approval of the Science Committee”, there are research, studies, analyses and interpretations of the academicians, bureaucrats, experts, students of insurance and actuary, which are approved by the editor. Articles relating to the issues and problems of the insurance sector in your country and in your region are welcomed. You may submit your articles in English, French or German.

TII and TIKA have signed a Cooperation Protocol to support the development of insurance sector in Central Asia, Balkans and Middle East |
Our Institute, providing services such as training, research, publications, consultancy to help the development of the developing countries as it does in Turkey has signed a Cooperation Protocol with The Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) “that carries out activities to support the progress of developing countries and provides economic, commercial, technical, social, cultural and educational cooperation to developing countries via projects aimed at assisting the development of these countries”, to support the developing countries.
Underlining the close relation between the development of insurance market and economic development and that the countries with developed insurance markets have better chances of securing sustainable development, TIKA President Musa Kulaklıkaya also stated that with this Protocol, they aim to support the development of the insurance market and therefore the economy of these countries.
According to TII Director Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel “This Protocol is important in delivering the 39-year experience of our Institute as well as the vast knowledge and experience of Turkish insurance sector in particular as a result of the work carried out with respect to EU harmonization process.” Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel added that “the financial and economic ties that will be established with the Central Asian, Balkan and Middle Eastern countries is crucial in making old historical and cultural ties grow stronger.”
