To increase the quality of employment of Turkish insurance sector, TII began setting up “TII Private Employment Agency”.
TII is setting up “TII Private Employment Agency” based on its responsibility to direct those who seek employment
to areas in which there is demand for new staff, to give the necessary qualifications to these people by
organizing training programmes for these people, for the purpose of increasing the quality, efficiency and
profitability of the sector.
TII, carrying out activities for the purpose of supporting the development of insurance sector and raise the awareness on insurance, also support the activities of other institutions. In this framework, TII Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel Oksay spoke at the “Bahçeşehir University Vocational High School Banking and Insurance Programme Seminars-2008” on the structure, public institutions, private companies and NGOs of of the insurance sector. Bahçeşehir University presented a plate to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel Oksay following the seminar in which TII Private Employment Agency was also introduced.
TII participated at the Human Resources Summit on April 16-17 at Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar Congress and Exhibition Hall. TII presented its training programmes, publications, Private Employment Agency which will go into operation soon, and its other activities with the participants of the Summit to which human resources managers and other staff of the companies have attended. TII Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel Oksay explained the purpose of attending the Summit as: “We meet the sector’s need for brining up and developing the human resources to a large extent. And now, we will serve to staff the companies with the right people through the Private Employment Agency. We announced that TII Private Employment Agency will go into operation soon for the purpose of providing the qualified work force to the sector. We will increase our support to the sector with all our activities.”
For the purpose of directing the people to the most appropriate areas for employment in the insurance sector, TII Research, Publications, Project and Career Unit Junior Expert Bilgehan Aksoy made a presentation at Hacettepe University (Ankara) on April 11th, within the scope of TII Career Meetings. During the TII Career Meeting, to which the students of Hacettepe University Department of Actuary showed great interest, Turkish insurance sector as well as TII Private Employment Agency was introduced. |

The first quarter of the TII Short Term Training Programmes was completed in April. Specialization trainings such as private pension and insurance accountancy have attracted interest in April. “Private Pension Contracts / Rights and Obligations of the Parties” training programme was given by Attn. Ahmet Karayazgan while “Basic Insurance Accountancy and Uniform Chart of Accounts” was given by Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury Insurance Supervisory Expert Metin Sariaslan, Ph.D. The training programmes of the second quarter that will cover May-June-July will be based on the evaluation of the first quarter training programmes as well as the demand analysis carried out by TII. Also widely known by the insurance sector, TII offers success guarantee for its training programmes as 75 percent.
The second quarter of training programmes that will cover May-June-July will be announced during the first week of May. Just as it was in the first quarter, the second quarter will include specialization and technical as well as soft-skill trainings.
TII is organizing training programmes on “Insurance English” and “Legal English” with Communicaid, which has a worldwide reputation for language trainings aiming at sectors. For each 30-hour training, experts will come from Communicaid’s Headquarters in London, which carry out successful activities with Chartered Insurance Institute. Turkish insurance sector has met Communicaid in 2006 with the programmes organized under the roof of the Association of the Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Turkey and the programmes attracted deep interest of the sector. With its cooperation with Communicaid, TII provides the training programmes to the sector with the same content and better fee opportunities in Istanbul.
The candidates must have at least intermediate level of English to apply for the training programmes. The deadline for the 30-hour “Insurance English” training, which will take place on May 26-30, is May 2nd, and the deadline for “Legal English” training, which will take place on June 2-6 is May 9th. The trainings will be given at TII’s classrooms in Tesvikiye, Istanbul.
TII included the commercial vocational high schools in its groups of universities with insurance departments to which it organized training seminars. Students of Sultanbeyli Turhan Fevzioğlu Commercial Vocational High School, Insurance Department met the experts at TII’s organization. Seminars on “Basic Insurance Concepts and Insurance Accountancy” by Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury Insurance Supervisory Expert Metin Sarıaslan, Ph.D on April 10th and on “Insurance Law” by Attn. Nuray Dinçment on April 25th were given to the students. The young students, the future of the sector, had the joy of meeting the professionals during these seminars to which Metin Sarıaslan, Ph.D and Nuray Dinçment contributed voluntarily. Dr. Sarıaslan stated that “these well-educated young people will contribute a lot to the sector” in view of the level of education, enthusiasm and interest of the students. The Headmaster Salih Kazan and the Dean Ayhan Toprak stressed their wish for these types of activities to increase, while stating how important this support is for them and for their students. |

4th issue of the Journal of Insurance Studies, prepared for the purpose of developing the Turkish insurance sector and supporting its competitiveness to reach to those of the developed countries, is published. The 4th issue of the Journal of Insurance Studies includes 7 refereed and 3 non-refereed articles, in addition to the French and English articles. The subjects of the refereed articles are as follows: Adding value to guaranteed annuity options; the problem of depth in Turkish insurance industry; comparison between run-off risk reserves and Turkish Financial Reporting Standards 4; The war against money laundering in the European Union (in French); Does Insurance Promote Economic Growth?; CMR Convention and CMR insurance; climate change and its impact on insurance sector.
TII added a Statistics section to its web site for the purpose of supporting its students and the studies of those who carry out research on insurance. This section includes the rich statistics and the data sources of the related sites, in order to enable the researchers to reach the general economic indicators and insurance statistics. In the statistics section on insurance, a direct link to the Association of the Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Turkey Report, Private Pension 2007 Development Report as well as the data of the important sites such as CEA, Swiss Re, Munich Re, Geneva Association.
General Statistics section includes Turkish Statistical Institute statistics, Republic of Turkey Central Bank statistics, Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury economic indicators, foreign trade data and statistics, international direct investment statistics, countries and profiles, European Commission 2007 Progress Report and CIA, OECD, IMF, World Bank statistics as the international sources.

Middle East Insurance Review magazine, with a large audience in Middle Eastern countries, analyzed the Turkish insurance sector in its April issue. In this respect, the representative of the Middle East Insurance Review magazine, who visited TII, received information on the history, training programmes and other services of TII in his interview with TII Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel Oksay.

Attention to Those Who Will Take the CAS and SOA Exams… The applications for the Spring 2008 actuaries examinations of CAS (Casualty Actuarial Society) and SOA (Society of Actuaries), for which TII is a regular exam centre, was closed on April 1st, 2008. Ticket of Admission and information regarding the exams will be sent to the candidates by either CAS or SOA, depending on the exams to which they applied.
