2009 TII Seminar Series have begun in March on different subjects |
The second TII Seminar Series, the first of which was organized last year, has been carried out in March on 6 different subjects. Complementing the 26th Term Basic Insurance Training Programme, the seminars were open to the sector. The seminars were given by experts of each subject.

- While Cemal Ererdi has discussed the impact of the crisis on insurance in the first TII Seminar, Prof. Dr. Kerem Alkin has evaluated the effects of the crisis on Turkish economy in the second seminar.
TII Seminar Series has begun on March 4 with the presentation of Axa Insurance CEO Cemal Ererdi on “Crisis and the Impact of Crisis on Insurance”. In his presentation, Ererdi mentioned that the crisis has affected the insurance sector just as it has affected the various other sectors in the world, that the market value of the chief companies has gone down and that the crisis has caused serious losses in the insurance sector. Following his presentation on the causes leading to insurance and the elements affecting insurance during the crisis, Ererdi answered the questions of the Basic Insurance Training Programme students and other participants. Another seminar on the financial crisis was given by Prof. Dr. Kerem Alkin on March 13th. Drawing a general framework of the crisis in his presentation, Alkin explained the impact of the crisis on the world economy and the point of exit.
 
- “Positive Thinking” against the crisis
Life coach and family consultant psychologist Davut İbrahimoğlu, Ph.D, explained how the positive thinking and meditation improved the quality of family, work and private lives of people. During the seminar in which there was a great interest of the sector, Ibrahimoğlu ran a session regarding how people may relax with meditation.

- A critical view from EU Expert M. Can Baydarol Ph.D on Turkey-EU relations
Another seminar organized in March was given by EU Expert M. Can Baydarol, Ph.D on March 17th. Baydarol had a critical overview of the Turkey-EU relations since from the Yalta Conference of 1945 up until today within the framework of the current problems. Baydarol’s presentation in which he analyzed the strategic place of Turkey during its harmonization with the EU took great attention of the participants.

TII introduced insurance profession to the university students |
TII Private Employment Agency, established last year by TII, was the guest at the Career Days organized by the career centres and student unions of Yeditepe University, Doğuş University and Koç University.
TII first attended the Yeditepe University Career Days with Head of Education Unit Ms Sema Bilgin, Head of Marketing and Communications Unit Mrs Nurhan Sütlaş and Jr. Expert of TII Career Unit Mr Batuhan Özgün on February 3rd. TII gathered together with the students of Yeditepe University together with the guest speaker, General Manager of Aviva Insurance, Mr Ertan Fırat. In the first session Bilgin introduced TII and TII Career. This introduction was followed by Fırat’s presentation on insurance profession and insurance sector.
TII answered the questions of students on the sector during the Career Day at Doğuş University on March 11th. Furthermore, there was a presentation on the sector employment and on the services of TII career by Mrs Nurhan Sütlaş and Mr Batuhan Özgün on March 17th at Koç University.
TII will join the career days of İstanbul Arel Üniversitesi on March 25th and that of Kadir Has University on April 1st.

TII Education Seminars have begun |
|
17th education seminar, which are given to the insurance departments of universities and which aim at improving the quality of insurance education and enhancing university-sector cooperation, was held at Uşak University Eşme Vocational High School on March 16th with the sponsorship of Axa Insurance. The 18th seminar was carried out in İlke Education and Health Foundation Kapadokya Vocational High School on March 20th together with the sponsorship of AvivaSA Life and Pension.
- TII 17th Education Seminar was held in Uşak University Eşme Vocational High School with the sponsorship of Axa Insurance
Osman Yücesan, a veteran of Turkish insurance sector, Emel Dolgun, Sales Manager of Axa Insurance Aegeon Region and Ms Sema Bilgin, TII Head of Education Unit participated as speakers at the seminar in Eşme Vocational High School. The seminar included issues on the structure of Turkish insurance sector, historical development of insurance in Turkey and in the world, crisis in the global insurance market and Turkish insurance sector.

- Education seminar was organized at İlke Education and Health Foundation Kapadokya Vocational High School with the sponsorship of AvivaSA Life and Pension.
TII lecturer Süheyl A. Becan, Ph.D, AvivaSA Life and Pension Head of Education Unit Cem Yalçın Bayer and TII Head of Marketing and Communications Unit Mrs Nurhan Sütlaş joined the seminar at Kapadokya Vocational High School as a speaker. Not only students from Banking and Insurance Department but also students from other departments were present at the seminar in which the institutions of Turkish insurance sector, risk management in insurance and private pension system were covered.

Seminars from TII aiming at “Insurance Awareness” |

TII began giving awareness raising seminars at the universities along with its mission to increase the insurance awareness by communicating its importance and introducing new products. During the first seminar at the Nevşehir University with the sponsorship of AvivaSA Life and Pension, TII Head of Marketing and Communications Unit Mrs Nurhan Sütlaş had a presentation on “Institutions of Turkish Insurance Market and TII”, AvivaSA Life and Pension Head of Education Unit Cem Yalçın Bayer had a presentation on “Insurance and Us, Private Pension System” and TII lecturer Süheyl A. Becan, Ph.D had a presentation on “Controlling the Risks We Face Through Insurance”.

TII “e-Basic Insurance Training Programme” is introduced to the sector |
e-Basic Insurance Training Programme, organized by Turkish Insurance Institute in cooperation with Element Training Technologies offers a very good opportunity both for those who seek to enter the sector and for those who want to improve themselves, was introduced to the sector at the meeting hall of the Association of the Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Turkey.
The opening speech was held by the Secretary General of the Association, Mr Erhan Tunçay. TII Head of Educaiton Unit Ms Sema Bilgin and Element Training Technologies Head of Marketing Group Mr Reha Tartıcı introduced the outline of the e-Basic Insurance Training Programme and how the system works. The first quarter of 2009 Short Term Training Programmes is completed |
The first quarter of 2009 Short Term Training Programmes is completed in March. 28 training programmes of this quarter were mainly composed of technical subjects and basic insurance trainings. Together with the end of March, the preparations for the next quarter are completed. As usual, the demands of the participants stated in the questionnaires are taken into consideration in preparing the training programmes of the next quarter. The content of the training programmes of the new quarter also include technical subjects and basic insurance trainings. The new quarter, covering April-May-June will begin on April 13th and will be completed at the end of June. TII continues its measurement and evaluation as well as satisfaction guarantee of 75 %, for its trainings carried out with the principles of maximum benefit and maximum efficiency.

International training programmes by TII |
Institute for Global Insurance Education (IGIE) established by the Insurance Institute of America, Chartered Insurance Institute and Insurance Institute of Canada with the purpose of creating a platform to discuss the educational matters with a global perspective in 1997 and having 26 members aims at increasing the educational standards, the promotion of vocational development and bringing international criteria for vocational capacity.
IGIE, to which our Institute has become a member in 2007, has prepared common training programmes based on the knowledge and experience of its members and for the use of its members only. “Introduction to Global Risk Management, Insurance and Financial Services” training programme covers a global perspective on how insurance works, personal and business insurance as well as risk management within the changing world conditions. The other training programme, “Life Insurance Basics”, is a basic programme covering the purpose and function of life insurance, life company operations, the products of life insurance, how these products are developed, priced and distributed as well as the life insurance policies.
The participants are free to start and proceed according to their own pace and working plan. IGIE will present a letter of success and TII, a certificate, to those who pass the exam after completing the training programme in maximum one year.

We are expecting your articles for the 6th issue of Journal of Insurance Studies |
Journal of Insurance Studies, published by TII, is the first and only refereed journal in Turkey on insurance in which the technical and/or theoretical issues in the agenda of the sector are analyzed.
In the “Articles Approved by the Science Committee” section of the journal, there are the articles written in accordance with the academic rules and qualified to be published by the Science Committee. In the “Articles not Submitted for the Approval of the Science Committee”, there are research, studies, analyses and interpretations of the academicians, bureaucrats, experts, students of insurance and actuary, which are approved by the editor. Articles relating to the issues and problems of the insurance sector in your country and in your region are welcomed. You may submit your articles in English, French or German.

TII signed the Global Compact |
TII signed the Global Compact including the 10 principles proposed to develop the global economy in a sustainable way and administer globalization for the benefit of all people.
Global Compact, with over 4700 corporate participants and stakeholders aims to establish a platform by countries, cultures and people more attached to one another with economy, trade and technology, against the common problems faced. It also aims to disseminate the concept of responsible citizenship. The 10 principles of Global Compact are:
Human Rights
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Labour Standards
Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
Environment
Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Anti-Corruption
Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

The French National School of Insurance has visited TII |
The French National School of Insurance, with which we cooperate relating to our membership to European Financial Certification Organization (eficert), has visited Turkey and our Institute between March 23-27, 2009, in order to get to know the Turkish insurance sector and TII more closely.
  
Within the scope of the visit, The French National School of Insurance students have attended detailed presentations on the structure, institutions and the opportunities of the Turkish insurance sector and also met Association of the Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Turkey, Milli Re, AKSigorta and Axa Insurance.
