Aiming to gather those working for the insurance sector through cultural and other social activities in addition to its activities that support sectoral development, TII established Turkish Music Chorus.

TII has set up a Private Employment Agency in addition to its services including education, research, project development and event management for the purpose of increasing the competitiveness of Turkish insurance sector. TII Private Employment Agency is established with the responsibility to direct those who aim at working for insurance sector to those areas needed by the sector and offer training programmes to these people to provide the qualities required by the sectored so as to increase the efficiency and profitability of the insurance sector. TII Private Employment Agency has begun to receive CVs. The pool includes the CVs of those looking for the appropriate position meeting their qualifications in the finance sector as well as the CVs that will be obtained by TII from the career days and the meetings held at the universities. According to the Regulation on Actuaries published in the Official Gazette dated August 15, 2007 and no.26614 and entered into force January 1, 2008, and its decree to hold the actuarial exams at least once a year, the exams began to be hold in Turkey for the first time. In accordance with the aforementioned regulation, an Examination Committee is set up by the Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury consisting of experts and well-experienced people in their area. In the Examination Committee, TII Director and Marmara University Banking and Finance Department lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suna Özyüksel Oksay representing the higher educations institutions, Head of Branch Mehmet Höbek representing the Directorate General of Insurance at Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury, Actuary Tuba Durak representing the Insurance Supervisory Board, Actuary Belkıs Sema Erşen representing the Association of the Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Turkey, Hacettepe University Faculty of Science Actuary Department lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meral Such from representing the higher education institutions and Chairman of the Actuaries Association Ömür Şengün took their place. The Council determined the essentials of the Actuarial Exams throughout its meetings since March and completed its work on the organization of the exams. The calendar of the exams was recently announced by the Undersecretariat of Turkish Treasury. The announcement designates that those willing to take the 2008 Actuarial Exams can apply to Turkish Insurance Institute in Istanbul and to Hacettepe University Actuary Department in Ankara between July 14-August 1, 2008. The 1st level, multiple choice exam will be held at Marmara University Banking and Insurance High School in Istanbul and Hacettepe University Actuary Department in Ankara. It is also indicated that those who are currently studying, in Turkey or abroad, but who will obtain an undergraduate or a graduate degree or those holding an undergraduate’s degree are allowed to apply to these exams. Providing its services at international standards, TII is about to complete the process to obtain ISO 9001:2000 quality certificate to certify its difference and to establish the aforementioned quality system within its structure. ISO 9001:2000 quality certificate is expected to be obtained in August. |

TII 2008 second quarter Short Term Training Programmes, which began in May, continue with no break. Interest to these programmes that address the needs of all parts of the insurance sector increase day by day. The training programmes of this quarter cover various subjects including CMR, health insurance, reinsurance accountancy, risk management, insurance law, financial mathematics. TII already started the preparations of the 3rd quarter training programmes and the 2nd quarter Short Term Training Programmes covering May-June-July will be completed in July 18. Legislation Harmonization Training Programmes, organized in order to facilitate the harmonization of Turkish insurance sector with the European Union and to inform the sector on the legislation passed during this period, have intensified in June. The training programme organized in this context, explaining the “Insurance Agency Regulation” which went into force on April 14th, 2008, the consequences of the problems and hesitations faced in practicing this regulation, have had warn intense. This training programme, carried out by Atty. Nuray Dinçment on June 13th, will be repeated in the next quarter of training programmes due to the interest of the sector. On the other hand the draft of the new Turkish Commercial Code takes the interest of the sector as it will introduce important changes concerning the business environment when it will enter into force. In this context, a training programme is organized to inform the changes that insurance sector will face in the event of having the draft Turkish Commercial Code enter into force, 6th Book of which is on insurance. The first part of the programme takes the Agencies, Insurance Book/General Principles and the second part takes Insurance Book and Principles According to Insurance Types. The training programme was carried out by Atty. Ahmet Karayazgan on June 9th and 13th. The other two Legislation Harmonization Training Programmes in June are Technical Reserves Concerning Non-Life Insurance Companies and Technical Reserves Concerning Life Insurance Companies explaining EU Insurance Accountancy Directive in comparison with the practices in England as well as the impact of the related Turkish Accountancy Standards/Turkish Financial Reporting Standards on the technical reserves. Both trainings were given by the Insurance Supervisory Expert, Metin Sarıaslan, Ph.D. The trainings addressing the Regulation on the Insurance and Reinsurance and the Pension Companies Technical Reserves and the Assets That These Reserves will Be Invested in, published in the Official Gazette on August 7th, 2007 and entered into force on June 1st 2008, and the problems faced in the application of the related circulars and notifications, have had intense participation. Basic Insurance Training Programme, in progress since the foundation of Turkish Insurance Institute and trained its 25th Term students during the 2007-2008 academic year, is completed in June. There were 6 branches offered including Fire-Engineering Insurance, Casualty Insurance, Marine Insurance, Accountancy, Life Insurance and Health Insurance and they were offered in two groups as morning and evening. The Commencement will take place in September and the 2008-2009 26th Term Basic Insurance Training Programme will begin in October. |

Journal of Insurance Studies, published by TII, is the first and only refereed journal in Turkey on insurance in which the technical and/or theoretical issues in the agenda of the sector are analyzed.
In the “Articles Approved by the Science Committee” section of the journal, there are the articles written in accordance with the academic rules and qualified to be published by the Science Committee. In the “Articles not Submitted for the Approval of the Science Committee”, there are research, studies, analyses and interpretations of the academicians, bureaucrats, experts, students of insurance and actuary departments, which are approved by the editor. The fifth issue of the Journal is expected to be published in December 2008.
